An offensive lineman from Oradell, New Jersey, Parcells arrived on Grounds in the fall of 1971 and was quickly embraced for his work ethic and leadership. The perseverance, passion, and purpose that Parcells brought to the game of football were not just characteristics of a good player, but the qualities of a good man—and the same character traits that he displayed during a long and rewarding career upon returning to his hometown.
A longtime gym teacher at Dater and Hubbard Elementary Schools, Parcells also served as Director of Recreation, a position he held for 31 years. It was in those roles that he taught, coached, and mentored countless children. His lifelong commitment to recreation was honored in 2005 when Ridgewood Field in Oradell was renamed the Doug Parcells Athletic Complex.
Parcells passed away in 2019. A scholarship at Ramsey High School was quickly established in his name.
His daughters Laura, a 2003 UVA graduate, and Keri traveled from California and Northern Virginia to accept the award on Doug’s behalf, and were joined by his former high school and college coach, Ralph Kirchenheiter.
