Loftin and his wife Stella arrived in Charlottesville in 1970. After buying local staple Ken Johnson Cafeteria, Charlie met Coach Sonny Randle and began feeding the team each week.
That tradition continued throughout the tenures of Dick Bestwick, George Welsh, Al Groh, and Mike London. Charlie and Stella also fed the coaching staff on Sunday evenings, forming deep relationships with the coaches and their families over good food and heartfelt conversations.
In addition to feeding student-athletes, Charlie supported them as a fan and by serving on the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Athletics Foundation from 1976-1980. From 1970 to 2019, with Stella by his side, Loftin attended all but two home football games.
